Barça, Messi And The Fifa Awards

December 18th, 2007 by Nic · 2 Comments

Just a quick mention of this. As expected Leo Messi came second to Kaka in the Fifa World Player Award for 2007. Kaka received 1,047 votes, Messi 504 and Cristian Ronaldo was third with 426. We all know that Messi has the talent to win this in the future, however, there is something that pleases me that he didn’t win. In recent years we have seen varios Barça players, Stoichkov, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho win this award or the Ballon d’Or, and it is nearly always followed by a drop in form. So, second place for Messi suits me fine; it will keep him hungry for success.

Meanwhile, Barça were awarded the 2007 Fifa Fair Play Award. This has more to do with Barça signing the sponsership deal with Unicef than it has to do with the nobleness of Deco, Messi and co. Still, another small reason to be proud of the club.

I just can’t leave it unmentioned that the word kaka means “sh*t” in a polite or childish way in my language. This no problem here though. When the name runs through media it is understood that the footballer is meant, not anything else.

    Well Done Messi great effort.
Hopefully someday you can win it.
Great Achievement for a 20 year old.
    Congrats!
