Barça Transfer Rumour Round-Up

March 13th, 2008 by Nic · 18 Comments

As we all know during weeks without a game the Barcelona press go into overdrive with transfer rumours. They nearly all come to nothing. However, there is no denying that the club will be working hard already on plans for next season so here is a quick resumé of this week’s stories.

The week began fairly slowly with reports that Ronaldinho had say no to Chelsea (again), Real Madrid were supposed to be after Mourinho though he is supposed to prefer the idea of Barça. Cesc Fabregas gave an interview on Catalan TV saying he was happy at Arsenal but did not rule out a move back to Barça in the future (I say get on your knees first, boy). A new name was mentioned: Miralem Pjanic who plays for Metz, and I have to admit I have never heard of. There was also talk that ex-blaugranas Laurent Blanc and Michael Laudrup were also being looked at as possible coaches next season. Ezequiel Garay (who had supposedly signed last month) is now said to be looking for another club because Barça have not followed up on their previous agreement. Schalke goalkeeper 21-year-old Manuel Neuer is also supposed to be a target, though I wonder: how many keepers do we need?

Today the papers exploded with transfer stories. Lyon are apparently asking for ridiculous money for Benzema, so Barça are now looking at Sevilla’s Luis Fabiano. Also on the Sevilla shopping list are Capel, Poulsen and Alves. There will be some unhappy Sevilla fans if we get them. Besides Fabregas and Poulsen there are a number of other midfielders mentioned. Frank Lampard and Luka Modric are again mentioned, as is Xavi Alonso, Franck Ribery, Danielle De Rossi and Werder Bremen’s Diego. Beside practically all these names is the condition: If Deco leaves.

Oh well, I imagine in the summer two or three of these names may end up signing for Barça. Send in your comments on who you think we should go for and why.

Lurdrup is a trator and a pure wanker! I will give Laporta a word if this happens

deco should definetely go, no doubt about it. diego is the best choice to bring in, he has been sublime in germany. if not him modric, though ill admit, i havent seen too much off but hear great things. but diego has proven himself in a far better league. the only need to bring in another striker is if dinho or henry leave, otherwise its not smart. alves is good to bring in, i have a feeling zambrotta may leave. the idea of laudrup and blanc is comical in my opinion.

I want Diego at Barca very much! Nic- can you tell me why everybody here says that Fabregas is not welcome at Barca and that he should get down on his knees to get back?

Neuer is absolutely amazing…. His Champion’s League performance was supernatural…. He was ever bit of Casillas’ level but even more spectacular ( Against Porto he singlehandedly beat them, clean sheet, stopped sever shots during the shootout, and the stops were spectacular), and is great on a day in day out basis, no soft goals, with this guy you really have to earn it…. I think he is only 22 or 23….. If we can get him, we should definately get him, if Valdes can beat him out as starter than more power to Valdes, but honestly after watching several games and a bunch of stuff available on youtube, I don’t see Valdes being anywhere near his league….. He would make our defense a wall….. I also very much like Garay, not sure the hold up on that one… He is young, big, great central defender, and takes all the penalty shots for Racing, he would keep us solid in the middle for years to come…. Modric, everyone raves about, but I’ve not seen so much of him and and it is a big step up in competition level…. I’m a bit wary of him, but so many are raving about him…. I like Diego, but I wonder if he could really replace Deco who brings such a toughness about him to the pitch, along with all the creativity, I know Deco is past his best days but I’d still hate to see him go…. Benzema is great but just resigned with Lyon today, so that is that (if we had sent Henry back to England, if that is what he wants, Benzema would have been a nice replacement…. with Messi’s injury woes, and Ronnie’s issues, we definately need 4 solid strikers, Sammy, Bojan, Messi when healthy, Ronnie when motivated and in shape, and Henry when he is happy….. Really all you can count on is Sammy, hopefully Bojan (just hate to put too much pressure on him so young) to be there and even Sammy has been down to injuries….. anyway, Benzema is gone…..

hey on the keepers how does anyone see guillermo ochoa the suposebly 3rd best goalie of the world according to france….. hes 22 and with a great future they had said in january he was supposbly gonna come instaed of pinto but frank said we need a backup goalie not another starting goalie.

How about selling GIO and bringing in Andres Guardado???along diego for deco and if ronni goes David Villa should come in

  • #12 // Mar 14, 2008 at 0:14

Rob…why the hell would barca sell Gio??!and bring in guardado??ochoa??r u a barca fan or a wherever-a-mexican-goes-fan?I’m mexican myself but as good as guardado is he is not barca quality. Gio will be with barca for many years to come..

We need to sign Dani Alves!!

    No more strikers, more defenders!!!

  • Morzzan // Mar 14, 2008 at 1:26

Allrighty then, its that time of the year and we have virtually all names in the football industry popping up. Benzema is wanted by Real too, so screw that. They without any doubts whatsoever will beat us in case he decides to leave. THEY HAVE TOO MUCH INCOME!!!!!!!!! Garay, yes, amazing potential but apparently, barca havent “followed” up with him, dont know what that means.
Diego, awesome, awesome awesome player!!!! If he comes in, crystal, thats all I can say. Alves, another amazing potential. Fabiano, well, I dont see him as an amazing striker in any case. Sorry, but it is just the way Sevilla play that he scores so many goals. I dont see any sparkling runs, no out of the box goals?
Ribery????? I thought he just signed for Bayern!!! How come he is back on the market already….
Yeah agree withRafael, we need defenders, and just one good, forward. If any of our existing forwards leave, then, yes, we need reinforcements!!!!

Getting Diego will be a genius plan.

Werder Bremen will need a hefty amount to let go of Diego though. He is the heart and soul of Bremen’s attack. They love him to death. Everytime a player wins the ball, they send it straight to Diego to produce some magic and surely he does deliver.

Goddamn and he is so young too.

  • FCB - Canada // Mar 14, 2008 at 2:40

Would love to see Alves and Diego in Barca. I think Alves is more of a reality but Diego will be difficult to get. I would also like to see someone who is similar to Robinho. I don’t know who that might be though.

  • ROB // Mar 14, 2008 at 5:46

yea thats rigth gio will stay ur rigth guardado is not ready or ochoa but i will go for rio ferdinand or terry….. or even sergio kun aguero

  • Jay // Mar 15, 2008 at 6:40

    @Taras
Fabregas is a cantera, dude. He chose to leave Barcelona. That is why the attitude of fans and the team management towards him is like this. I say, it’s correct.

He left for England thinking he wont get the chances at Barca. He thought that youth players take a while to get into the team but looking at Messi, Bojan, Giovani et all, he must be wondering deep down that he could have made it too.

The English media had said in the past that young players take time to get into Spanish first teams. That is why they prefer moving on. That is ridiculous.

We don’t need Fabregas, even if he is the world’s best already.

    We’ll make a new one.

I think all of the talk about Neuer is a bit premature, just look at this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=q6Nc9huYQQs
I mean, I know it would be stupid to judge him just on one mistake but it would be equally stupid to judge him on one (albeit magnificent) performance. Alves would be great but he really does lack discipline, defensively and mentally - he loses his head too much, and although Barca’s game is all about attack, I don’t think we would be worth more than €30m. Capel is still just aa rising star and wouldn;t really fit into Barca’s cuurent style of play, neither would Fabiano as he relies on balls being put into the box, normally from crosses, plus I tihnk he’s just having an unusually good season. Garay looks great but I think that since Marquez, Puyol and Milito are all there, he isn’t a necessity. Diego would be the only really good signing for Barca, he really is unbelievable, I would say the same for Ribery but after just being bought for around €25m, he would cost too much. De Rossi would be doing the same job as Yaya Toure, so there would be very little reason to buy him, and Lampard is slightly too selfish to fit in well at Barca. Modric would probably be talked about more if he played in one of the bigger European leagues, but from what I know of him he has a great eye for a pass, brilliant dribbling skills and he should be relatively cheap, i would say he is quite similar to Alexander Hleb, although I haven’t seen that much of him to give a detailed description of him.

cos of henry, im now scared of 30-year old players, i imagined if we had bought ribery, he would have been good with messi, been endeared to the nou camp faithful with his attitude, i tink attitude matters a lot, too late for ribery now sha…of all the signings mentioned, i tink diego is ok to replace deco

  • e10 // Mar 16, 2008 at 3:07

    Diego and Garay sound great.
but i also think that Barca are deeply in need of a new goalkeeper.
Look at the keepers of other big teams. chelsea: Cech, Real: casillas etc..
I think Barca need to invest in a great goalkeeper ( for example: Cech )

And Frank Lampard would also be a good addition, and he can replace Deco, at the moment in the EPL with an injury plagued season he has 17 goals.
Now tell me, which one of our midfielder’s score that many goals in one season ?………………….None.

Lampard, a goalkeeper and Garay are essential to buy and i guess Diego would be a Gift.

  • e10 // Mar 16, 2008 at 3:10

and just to add-on, i would LOVE to have BENZEMA at Barca.
Such a great player at such a young age.
Imagine him and Bojan at Barca teaming up-front in about 5 years.
    OMG

  • Morzzan // Mar 20, 2008 at 6:35

Well, Diego is certainly out of question too now that he has agreed to sign for Madrid. Benzema is committed to Lyon again and probably will be very expensive right now as he is under contract till 2013 … i think. Then, Garay seems to be a mystery, we sign him, then we dont? What the hells going on?
Madrid seem to have an upper hand in the transfers this season and they are going BIG! Diego is already committed, they seem to be fighting for Garay and Caeceras (i think thats how his name is spelt), Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Quaresma, Nasri, are some of the names that are being linked. Although most of them are just media hypes, I think they are going for strong reinforcements . Like last year, Im sure they will invest heavy again.

  • zairus fadzli // May 3, 2008 at 16:50

garay is a must since we are lack on goals from set pieces. he would be an incredible signing for barca. diego and cesc will be the best replacement for deco. a new kind midfield structure should be implemented. with xavi/iniesta lack authority to be compared the giant Yaya. alves for zambrotta. since alves when he is moving forward to attack always bring up goals rather than zambrotta despite his hardwork more tend to pass the ball to opponents. abidal is still good for the left back slot. while we need pique is now mature enough to go back to be a barca first teamer. goalkeeper will be the most questionable department. valdes is a decent one, u need more than decent to a guard for barca. i bet a gk a with a structure of vandersar or cech or buffon wud save the scholes’ goal. but we really lack ronaldinho. he’s the different between now and before. we still need a magician. messi not enough
