Barça-Valencia Preview

May 3rd, 2008 by Nic · 17 Comments

Barça need to pick themselves up after the disappointment of Tuesday night and go into the final four games of the season with the intention of finishing second in the table. A third place would mean having to play the Champions League qualifiers in August which would cause some changes in the pre-season plans. Tomorrow evening Barça take on Valencia at Camp Nou (kick off 7pm) hoping to gain revenge for the Copa del Rey defeat in March.

Barça are without the injured Milito, Iniesta and Toure for the game which means a return to the squad for Oleguer, Marquez and Giovani. Frank Rijkaard has been saying he has no intention of leaving which is probably the correct thing to say right now even if everything is already decided; he will be hoping to end his time at Camp Nou in the best possible way. No doubt there will be some fans who will want to protest tomorrow for the disappointing season, I would rather they stayed at home as the team need all the support they can get right now if we are going to have a chance of second place, and Frank Rijkaard deserves some respect for all he has done for the club.

Voro has replaced Wembley hero Ronald Koeman as Valencia’s coach which means that Cañizares, Albelda and Angulo are back in contention after their months of being ostracised by Koeman. Valencia are still in need of points as they are only four points above the relegation zone. They showed a big improvement in their first game under Voro, beating Osasuna 3-0 last weekend. Voro has brought back a 4-4-2 system with two holding midfielders in the middle and two attacking midfielders on the flanks.

The teams have met three times already this season. In the Copa del Rey semi final the teams drew 1-1 at Camp Nou while in the return game Valencia won 3-2. In the league game at Mestalla Barça had it a bit easier winning 0-3

Barça’s 18-man squad: Valdés, Pinto, Zambrotta, Oleguer, Thuram, Puyol, Abidal, Sylvinho, Xavi, Marquez, Edmilson, Deco, Gudjohnsen, Messi, Bojan, Eto’o, Henry, Giovani.

Possible starting XI: Valdés, Zambrotta, Thuram, Puyol, Sylvinho; Xavi, Marquez, Deco; Messi, Eto’o, Henry.

My Prediction: Barça 2 Valencia 2

Can anyone catch e10 and Blaugrana who have 3 correct predictions each?
