Bojan Called Up For Spain

February 1st, 2008 by Nic · 6 Comments

Luis Aragonés has included Barça striker Bojan Krkic in Spain’s squad for next Wednesday’s friendly match with France in Malaga. If Bojan plays he will become the youngest player to play a full international in Spain’s history. The current record is held by Angel Zubieta who was 17 years and nine months old when he made his debut against Czechoslovakia in 1936. Next Wednesday Bojan will 17 years, 5 months and 9 days old.

There is a pretty good chance that Aragonés will give Bojan a few minutes as this will guarentee that he cannot be called up to play for Serbia. Xavi and Iniesta are also in the squad but Carles Puyol has been left out after getting injured last night. I’m waiting for more news on Puyol’s injury but he will definitely miss Sunday’s game with Osasuna.

The complete squad for Spain is:

At. Madrid: Pablo
Arsenal: Cesc
FC Barcelona: Bojan, Iniesta, Xavi
Betis: Juanito
Espanyol: Luis García, Riera
Liverpool: Arbeloa, Reina, Torres, Xavi Alonso
Real Madrid: Casillas, Sergio Ramos
Mallorca: Fernando Navarro, Güiza
Valencia: Albelda, Albiol, Marchena, Silva, Villa
Villarreal: Capdevila

I’ve noticed that in England Fabregas is called by his last name but in Spain he’s just Cesc. Why’s that?

It just came to my mind as I saw the squad.

Cesc comes from Francesc, his first name and is his ‘football name’. Like “Xavi” is the ‘football name’ of Xavier Hernández.

Fernado Navarro is up there too. Another one that maybe slipped through our fingers a little too easily (like Reina), would have been a great back up for Abidal.

    Excellent news, and entirely unsurprising.

Spain’s Euro 2008 team is going to be exciting. Not saying they’ll win anything, but Bojan-Torres frontline. Wow.

This is good news, as Bojan will get valuable experience playing in the national team, i’m hoping that he impresses on his debut.

    Hi Slim,

There is a tendency in Latin countries to use first names and a tendency in Britain to use surnames.

There are lots of examples of this.
Jordi Cruyff was Jordi for Barça, and Cruyff for those blighters at Manchester United though maybe this isn’t a good example. The former wanted to distinguish him from his illustrious father, and the latter, specifically didn’t, thereby selling more shirts.
