Fifa continue to bend their own rules in favour of Real Madrid. If yesterday it was Robinho, today it is Diarra who has been given special permission by Fifa to play for Madrid this weekend at the expense of missing his national team Mali’s qualifying match for the African Nations Cup.

Another controversy has been caused this week by fixture congestion and the struggle between club and country for the services of a player. Real Madrid star Robinho has been called up by Brazil for the Copa America which begins on 26th June in Venezuela.

At the time of writing, the kick off times have not been confirmed for week 37 games. It seems likely that the desires of TV companies will override the wishes of the clubs and Barça-Espanyol and Zaragoza-Madrid will both start at 9pm on Saturday 9th June.

With the closest title race in years in its final phase we now have an undesired and untimely interruption next weekend for international games. This breaks the league’s rhythm, it is frustrating for fans and clubs are bound to complain if any of their players get injured.
