After the solid performances from the defence in the last few games, Frank Rijkaard will now have to re-organize for tomorrow night’s game against Levante. It has been confirmed that Gianluca Zambrotta has a torn muscle in his right leg and will be out for about a month, while Rafa Marquez is doubtful after picking up a knock against Zaragoza. The good news is the return of captain Carles Puyol after three months on the sidelines.
If Marquez is fit to play Rijkaard may not want to break up his partnership with Gabi Milito which has looked very good in the last three games. This could mean that Puyol will be used at right back where he originally played when he first broke into the first team in 1999 under Louis Van Gaal. If Marquez doesn’t play Puyol will probably play in central defence with Oleguer filling in for Zambrotta.
Of course, Puyol could start on the subs’ bench as Rijkaard may prefer to introduce him gradually after his lengthy absence, which if Marquez doesn’t play would mean a return to the team for Lilian Thuram. There is also the possibility that Abidal will be given a rest as so far this season he has played every minute, this would give a chance to Sylvinho to play his first match of the season.
