Eto’o Threatens To Leave Barça

April 20th, 2008 by Nic · 42 Comments

In an interview broadcast today on the Spanish radio station RAC 1, Samuel Eto’o declared that if things continued the same and Barça didn’t win anything next season, he will look for a move abroad. Eto’o stated that he had reached the top in Spain at Barça but he wanted to win titles and if that if he left Barça it would be to move to a club in another country.

If that was bad news, worse was to come when Barça’s director Ferran Sorriano announced on BBC Radio’s Five Live that Thierry Henry is happy at Barça and that he will stay at the club next season. Let’s just hope it is only talk, it’s been a bad enough day with those cabrones from Madrid winning.

i was so unimpressed with this. so unnecessary to talk like this at this point in the clubs time.

Cabrones of Madrid? I think you can’t handle the fact that Madrid is 11 points clear of Barça. Na, I’m disappointed in you Nic. I never thought you’d say such a thing. Hating Madrid [as a Barça-fan] is something I can understand, but do you really need to use such a word to describe real Madrid-players?

At least, the ‘cabrones’-players aren’t whining in a little corner about how sucky their team is and that they’re going to another club, just because it’s going wrong for a couple of months. Pff. Toughen up. It’s not the f*cking end of the world. And dear lord, can you people stop with the Henry-hate? Yés, I know, this is nothing, nada, res! But honestly, did you all gave him a chance?!

NO. You know why? ’cause you all are so naive to think that playing at such a high level is childsplay. And that changing from one club to another one is childsplay. Yes, even learning a language, living in another country, being apart of your family, being hated by the fans, jup, it’s all childsplay. It’s easy. Yeah, we all know it, don’t we? He signed for the contract, give him the f*cking chance to show why Barça even tried to get him.

And yes. I will celebrate the 31th title of Real Madrid this year.

Eto’o you are my idol, but sorry you are never going to be bigger than Barca.
Another thing I hear, is that Fonnie has not even agreed terms with Milan, Adriano Galliani just using Ronnie’s name to gain votes in the Elections.

  • blove // Apr 20, 2008 at 23:39

nightmarish days… the idea of having thierry henry and not samuel eto’o is far more than i can bear. lets hope we offload henry’s whining to some other poor club and let them deal with it, then strengthen the squad so eto’o doesn’t leave. on the one hand its not the best to drop ultimatums, but its to be expected from a guy with the character of samu. i don’t really blame him too much because things have been pretty dreadful around the barca camp for over a year now.

  • Diatus // Apr 20, 2008 at 23:47

    Here we go again!!!
On the eve of a very important clash for the team, Eto’o has to say something like this. I hope that rest of players will use this as good enough reason for us to crush Man U…I hope so, God I hope so.

  • Andrew // Apr 21, 2008 at 0:50

I hope Eto’o stays I like him a lot…but this was kind of unprofessional. Didn’t Deco say the same thing earlier in the year too?

  • Blaugrana // Apr 21, 2008 at 1:07

Henry can leave end of next season but him leaving naw will reflect bad on the club and himself,

  • Blaugrana // Apr 21, 2008 at 1:16

Wait nic if i’am correct madrid just needs to win 2games or 1win+draw to win laliga?

  • Shahenshah // Apr 21, 2008 at 1:36

    no eto’o noooooooooooooooooo

  • Nic // Apr 21, 2008 at 1:43

dnzi - I can think of plenty of worse words to use for something I don’t like. Don’t worry I haven’t cut my wrists yet.
As for Henry, I think the vast majority of fans (mistakenly) welcomed him. People could forgive a poor performance, what annoys me (and others?) is his excuses. The worst was him saying last week that he had never run so much in his career. He might as well just accuse us all of being blind.

  • Joe // Apr 21, 2008 at 2:32

nic, i thought you were referencing the fine Eto’o got by taunting Madrid a few months ago - hence the italics?

  • ash // Apr 21, 2008 at 3:53

Agree with you guys….as a die-hard Barca fan, Samu REALLY has to say something like that. What a time though. Keep goin’, just keep goin like that,Samu…no wonder you don’t get the same affection as Stoichkov!!!!

  • Rohit // Apr 21, 2008 at 4:06

Nic, dint expect you to use slang like that and I support Dnzi for his comments. But hey, emotions run high. Its cool.
Neways, yeah as Dnzi said, when Madrid lost like every game in what, Jan and feb, i do not remember any player saying stuff that was detrimental to the squad morale. It was totally unprofessional of sammy saying that, I knew something was coming, just surprised it came from him. I know he is an amazing player of all sorts but, he shows off his unprofessional attitude at times. He plays at the highest level and, actions such as these, the entire madrid incident, just is not expected of a player of his caliber. Somehow, it shows his loyalty towards Barcelona. Like someone else said, he is not bigger than the club. Seeing his performances of late, he shows this arrogant attitude, and he was responsible for not getting the win yesterday by missing that header. So, i wonder who he is trying to blame?

  • Shahenshah // Apr 21, 2008 at 4:56

I guess being put on the right pissed him off a bit. Add that to seeing Henry’s constant whining which prolly encouraged him to speak up too.

If Eto’o leaves, I will be very sad.

And also, yes Nic, Henry’s excuses annoy me too.

Too many stars thinking they are bigger than the club. This team is or has turned into los galacticos.

  • FCB // Apr 21, 2008 at 6:30

dnzi–u should expect and accept ppl in a barca blog to say bad things about madrid…its wrong but believe me, i dont think ppl in a madrid blog would have any nice things to say about barca.

  • Varughese // Apr 21, 2008 at 7:11

What was the need for Eto to say something like this? He might be feeling that only he is trying to get something out of a miserable season. Then he is wrong. If there is someone who had tried their best this season, it has to be Iniesta and Xavi. Look at the timing of these comments. Even though we couldn’t win against Espanyol, that performance did give us some hope. They just needed to stay together, but looks like they can’t.

I have said this before - None of these stars made F C Barcelona. So they are very much welcomed to walk away, we did survive after the F*go episode, then why we will not if Eto is not there? If Eto decides to leave we can go and get Benzema or better Drogba. These guys would love to play for Barcelona.

  • Jay // Apr 21, 2008 at 7:18

Why would Eto’o do this at such a crucial time, with Man United coming up….

  • Rafael // Apr 21, 2008 at 8:05

I think Barcelona thought Henry would replace Ronnie.. how ignorant is that.

  • Josep // Apr 21, 2008 at 8:40

    Hi Nic, everyone.

You people should relax really. It’s not like Eto’o got a mic and said something like: “hey you people, you should listen very carfully to what I have to say. If we don’t win any titles,…”.
If you look at the interview entirely and look at how the kid actually provoked Eto’o in saying that he will be leaving some day, it seems to me that this is all not much of a big deal. Rather, people should be happy, because in saying what he did, he actually ensured that he will be staying for next year! And I think he actually intended to say just that. But the kid was like, “you don’t fool me. I KNOW you will be leaving some day…” Hence Eto’o said what he said…
Everybody knows, that if Barcelona don’t win titles, players will be leaving, and less players will be eager to come. That is just the way it is. It’s just not so smart from Eto’o to say this in an interview before a very important game, but it’s not like this is a such big deal eather…

Oh and dnzi: “I’m disappointed in you Nic. I never thought you’d say such a thing.” he said to the Barcelona fan who just called Madrid ‘cabrones’. LOL!! Are you serious???

  • John // Apr 21, 2008 at 8:47

Well Eto’os latest outburst only confirms how bad things have become….. A one sparkling team has descended into a fractious band of cliques and self interest… At the heart of this is management of the worse kind…

Rijkaard has to be held ultimately respnosible… as he has allowed such a situation to develop over the last 2 years as the players were allowed as quoted by Xavi ” to take their foot of the gas”.

Every week I watch in the hope that the players will take responsibility and be professional…. It does not happen! for the amonut of money these guys are paid it is a disgrace…

The board seem to be out of touch with reality…. some saying one thing others saying another… Laporta looks more like a rabbit in headlights and un willing to acknowledge that problems exist…and more importantly act…

The best chance of remedy has been passed over… The club in years to come will rue not bringing JM to the helm. People say he will not play the Barca way… What is that over the last two seasons…. a team that has twice thrown away the league… a team that does not try, that cannot defend, who has shown a capacity to be average, unimaginative, lazy and have no courage!!!

Since the Mardrid game we have been truly awful.. We have been fortunate to have got so far in the champions league as the draw has been very kind… this has to an extent taken attention away from the truly dreadful league form.. we will go out of the champions league when we come up against well motivated and skilled opposition like Man Utd… just like Liverpool last season, as the players will have to actually try.. somethng that they have not done in nearly two years…

What a shock that must be for the players who were so used to winning, who still have forgotten that to win you have to train hard, act as one when it comes to team spirit and above all be professional.. someting that the does not spring to mund when I look at the current Barca set up… The decay is for all to see…. What a waste, what a sad sorry waste….

  • Barca Fan_Miki // Apr 21, 2008 at 11:08

We don’t need this , not now when we have the only chance to save the seson the CL is the only thing we left an such comments from the leeding players is not needed , if we wont a win we have to stay together and with the suport from the fance to try win this!

  • Jay // Apr 21, 2008 at 11:26

Things don’t seem to stop getting worse. First, Madrid won 2-0 and now Eto’o’s outburst.

  • dnzi // Apr 21, 2008 at 11:29

FCB - I can understand that you all hate madrid. I’m not the biggest fan of Barça, but I’d never use bad words to describe them. Well, álmost never. A bit rivalry is fine, it’s even better / more fun / whatever. But don’t mix it up with a profanity.

Pablo - I can’t say I’m a Milan-insider, but I think it was a cheap idea of Silvio to get more votes.

Nic - Hehe, easy with the knives :P

  • Jay // Apr 21, 2008 at 11:31

“Eto’o said that he felt good at Barça, but at the same time he spoke frankly about his future: “If next season is the same, and I don’t win any titles, I’ll probably leave Spain to go to the club that makes me the best offer”. He added “the day I don’t feel good here, I’ll talk to the management and we’ll agree on who it’s going to be”. ”
    - FCBarcelona.com

What a way to lose respect…..

  • Jay // Apr 21, 2008 at 11:33

All you’d like to tell to any player who makes such statements is :-
GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!

The lack of unity is definitely evident.

  • Jay // Apr 21, 2008 at 11:35

    @ dnzi
The Madrid hate is fine, dude. Absolutely normal.

  • Titi186 // Apr 21, 2008 at 14:32

@ Nic and everybody - You see now you are falling into the trap of seeing one player as a club. Eto’o is better than Henry (who Im not going to bother with as everyone has made their mind up over although he could stop whining as much granted), Guddy, Ronnie etc BUT if he goes, and thats still a big if, he will go for an extrodinary amount of money say £30m (english money) so that would enable Barca to buy some other people who ARE as good as Eto’o eg. Benzema, Torres, Aguero (in 2yrs or so) so try to remember that.

Barca got over the F*go move, the Ronado move (who in my opinion was in his prime better than Eto’o sorry to say) and Barca will recover from the Ronnie downfall.

Samuel Eto’ for all his brilliance is not ‘Més que un club’ . Fc Barcelona is ‘Més que un club’. End of.

  • NateW // Apr 21, 2008 at 14:42

eto has mad skill .. i find i was seeing it more as he tried to fill the boots in ronaldinho & messi absence .. always doing tricks .. but i find he is trying to beat everyone .. when sometimes he should just take a shot.

eto has been working hard on the field .. he always shows up to work hard and win .. most of the articles on him, he says positive things .. trying to turn around the team mentality .. or get the negative attitude off the team.

the media are always playing games .. they need these sort of stories ..

  • Hilal // Apr 21, 2008 at 15:00

Can you really blame him? The guy works his ass off week in week out, in fact he is one of the few players that consistently plays at a high level. Even if he does not play well, he gives his all. How do you think it make him feel to look around and see half the players on the team not giving anywhere near 100%? Then as a reward for all his hard work Rijkaard goes and puts him on the right where he is completely ineffective. I cannot blame him for thinking of what is best for his future, he is not one of the players slacking so why should he go down with the ship!!

If we get a manager who can instill the same desire and heart that Eto’o has in all our players then i have no doubt that he will stay.

  • blaugranaboy // Apr 21, 2008 at 16:38

oh my word you people whinnig about the “cabrones” comment are worse than theirry henry. give me a break. u guys living in a bubble? are u sheltered little children? words like this are part of life, get over it. and its a BARCELONA website, your most bitter rival. stick to ur madrid website if u dont want to see anti-madrid talk. and honestly its not that bad a word at all. ive called other players and managers A LOT worse. and this is not “a bit of rivalry”. this is over 100 years of fierce competition and political issues. ur def one of those people that think football is “just a game”.

  • Snyde // Apr 21, 2008 at 16:45

I normally refrain from commenting obvious things but dnzi, you seem very new to such a rivalry or even football. To think, you take mere profanity in this, perhaps the greatest football rivalry, so deeply. This rivalry is not about which group of mercenaries you prefer, at it’s height it was about oppression of a people and their culture, people died because of it. And you mind profanity. Tch!

  • Shahenshah // Apr 21, 2008 at 17:45

Doesnt cabrones mean rascals? Its not a really offensive word. Everybody uses rascals. Infact there was a movie called rascals something with little kids. Its like a snack compared to other insults, especially related to the nether regions which are like full course meals.

Once you bring someone’s momma into it, then its really offensive.

  • Legend Stone // Apr 21, 2008 at 18:15

Well, persons may say anything when they may be overcome by emotion and we need to understand this and not make too much a deal of it. Has there been anyone wo have contributed to this blog who has not used profanity against another team? “Let the one without sin cast the first stone.” The concern should not be so much on the profanity used but rather on the crisis at hand for this illustrious group which is far more than just a football club. Any player, no matter how great, can be replaced. Indeed players say all kinds of things and make all kinds of threats but football does not revolve around any player. I believe that players should seek to be professional in good and bad times and be educated into the “dangers” of the media. A truly great footballer is one who recognizes his talents and contributions to the team but also does not think of himself more than he ought to think. Players are not the only ones to make this mistake but managers/coaches, directors and presidents make it also. No player is above a team though. But I don’t think Eto’o sees himself above the team though, and he is right for wanting to play for a team that wants to win trophies. If Barcelona does not see the importance of winnig trophies then Eto’o should go. Barca should not only say that they want to win but play to demonstrate this.

  • bobby // Apr 21, 2008 at 18:41

HEY I KNOW that i have mentioned alot of mexican soccer players but its because i think theyll do good to the club but I THINK CARLOS SALCIDO just became champ 2nd time in a row with psv in netherlands and called him the 2nd best defender in that league we d need a solid defender… butive heard about garay and the guy is to young and needs more expirience..

  • Shahenshah // Apr 21, 2008 at 19:25

i think we are worrying for no reason. Clearly we are going to win titles next year and eto’o will stay for couple of more seasons.

  • Dr.Osmo // Apr 21, 2008 at 19:26

    WTF ! :o

  • #12 // Apr 21, 2008 at 19:52

As much as I like etoo I think he didn’t realize that his comments were going to be blown outa proportion by the media..but think about it, if david villa or huntelaar said it people would view it normal..it would b a shame if villa “wasted” his career at valencia not winning anything..same with etoo, why should he stay if we r not going to win anything, right? The difference between a good player and a great players is trophies. I see it more as etoo showing his desire of winning rather than being extremely arrogant. But I do indeed believe it was unwise of him to say it like that

all this has been brewin up, i wonder why you are all surprised….more revelations please

  • Cule // Apr 21, 2008 at 23:08

This is a website by and for cules. Los blancos = cabrones, whether they win la liga or not! Most of us here are antimadridistas - get used to it.

I agree, Eto’o has a big mouth, but he plays with passion and he speaks his mind. Bad timing? Of course, it is, but he’s giving vent to a woeful, dreadfully frustrating season. Give Puyol the mic and let’s see what he says - or Xavi, or Iniesta, or Messi. I’d rather have 1 Eto’o for 3 Henrys!

Cheers, Nic, and keep up the great work!

    Visca el Barca!!!!!!!!
