Ex-Barcelona player Guillermo Amor is in a serious condition after suffering a car accident last night. Amor was returning from Valencia where he had been commenting on last night’s match when his car crashed at approximately 2.20am on the AP-7 motorway near Atmella del Mar. He was rushed to the Verge de la Cinta hospital in Tortosa where he underwent abdominal surgery at 5am. Amor, who is 40, also suffered thoracic trauma and a fractured pelvis, and though his life is not thought to be in danger he is being kept in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Amor was one of the unsung heroes of Johan Cruyff’s dream team, playing a total of 550 games for Barça and scoring 89 goals. He won five Ligas, one European Cup, two Cup Winners Cups and three Copa del Reys as a Blaugrana before joining Fiorentina in 1998. He also played for Villarreal and Livingstone before retiring in 2003.
I was in such a rush this morning to write my match report that I missed this news, I have just come home and found out. Amor was always a great professional, I remember how he missed the European Cup Final at Wembley in 1992 because he got booked in the vital last group game with Benfica, it was typical of him to give everything for the team and not pull out of a tackle even though it meant he missed the final. I believe he had also missed the previous season’s Cup Winners Cup Final for the same reason. I also remember the crucial goal he scored in the Bernabeu to give Barça a 0-1 win in the penultimate game of the 93/94 season, the three points were vital to Barça retaining their title that season. I wish him a full and speedy recovery.
