Lyon-Barça Preview

November 26th, 2007 by Nic · 2 Comments

Barça visit Lyon tomorrow night (kick off 8.45pm) knowing that a victory will mathematically guarantee them top spot in Group E. In order to be sure of qualifying for the next round Barça just need to make sure they don’t lose by three goals or more. With Thierry Henry out injured there may be a start for Bojan Krkic who will become the youngest goalscorer in Champions League history if he scores tomorrow.

Tomorrow Bojan will be 17 years and 91 days old, the record is held by Ghanaian player Peter Ofori-Quaye who was 17 and 195 days when he scored for Olympiakos in 1997. Meanwhile, Victor Valdés will be trying to extend his record for not conceding a Champions League goal. He has kept clean sheets in the last five European games.

Lyon could be without top scorer 19-year-old Karim Benzema who was substituted during Lyon’s 0-2 win at Rennes on Saturday. Benzema who has eleven goals this season, has a bruised right thigh and will face a late fitness test, if he doesn’t recover his place could be taken by Brazilian Fred. Barça will need to watch out for Lyon’s other striker Ben Arfa who scored at Rennes as well as free kick specialist Juninho who also got a goal on Saturday.

Ronaldinho will be back in the starting line-up for Barça and Frank Rijkaard will have to chose whether Bojan comes in for Henry or whether Gudjohnsen will start again in midfield. The second option would see Iniesta move to the left wing and Ronaldinho playing as a false centre forward. I’ve got a sneaking feeling that Rijkaard will go for this second option and reserve Bojan and bring him on as a second half substitute. Carles Puyol should start as it’s unlikely that he will allow his bruised ribs to keep him out of the game. There may also be a return for Lilian Thuram as Frank Rijkaard has picked him in the last three Champions League games. A victory would be great for morale going into Saturday’s derby with Espanyol.

Possible Starting XI: Valdés; Puyol, Thuram, Milito, Abidal; Xavi, Toure, Gudjohnsen; Messi, Ronaldinho, Iniesta.

My Prediction: Lyon 1 Barça 1

Please send your predictions. So far this season Nick, e10 and FCB-Canada are our prediction kings. I have yet to get any right.

I think Bojan will score in this game to become the youngest. :) I sure would like to see it. Messi the other goal. 2-1 score.

I’ll be more interested to see how Iniesta plays with Ronaldinho.
