Marquez And Mexico Through To Quarter-Finals

July 2nd, 2007 by Nic · 1 Comment

A fine performance from Rafa Marquez helped Mexico towards a 2-1 victory over Ecuador. Following their 2-0 win over Brazil, Mexico have now qualified for the quarter-finals regardless of what happens in their final group match against Chile. If Marquez can continue playing at this level, he will have a good chance of regaining his place in Barcelona’s first team.

Marquez set up Mexico’s first goal after 20 minutes when his long pass found Nery Castillo who scored his second goal of the tournament. Omar Bravo made it 2-0 after 80 minutes before Ecuador scored a consolation goal through Edison Méndez with five minutes remaining.

In the other game last night, Brazil bounced back from their defeat against the Mexicans, with an easy 3-0 win over Chile. Real Madrid’s Robinho scored all three goals
