One Year Old Today

May 12th, 2008 by Nic · 46 Comments

I am proud to announce that Fcbnews is one year old today. It has been a lot of hard work but it has been a great pleasure to watch it grow. In that year I have made 534 posts on Barça and there have been a total of 4,303 comments sent in by you the readers. Many many thanks to all those who have contributed by sending comments, but even if you have never sent a comment I’d like to thank you all for reading. I’d also like to apologise to anyone who I haven’t been able to reply to at any time, whether it was a comment with a question or an email, I hope you understand that there is only one of me, that I have a life and a day job to take care of too and sometimes it is just too much to reply to everyone. In the same way I am not always able to follow all the suggestions that you send, but I am grateful for all of them nonetheless. My knowledge of how a computer works has never been great so I am not always capable of doing everything I would like to, but I have learnt a great deal along the way and will strive to continue improving the site.

Fcbnews receives visits from all around the globe, just in the last month people from 158 different countries have looked in. As the site is written in English perhaps it is to be expected that most visits come from the U.S and the UK, but after that the countries with most visits last month are Canada, Egypt, Australia, India, Norway, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Malaysia, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, Nigeria and Russia (in that order). Just for my own curiosity perhaps you would like to write in telling us where you are from, and also I’d love to know how you came across the site; whether it was through a google or yahoo search, through Soccerlens, one of the Barça forums or by any other means, please send a comment to tell us.

Unfortunately it has not been a great year for Barça, but let’s hope that the next twelve months give us a little bit more to cheer about. Thanks again for reading.

    Happy birthday to the site!

Btw, I think this is the best Barca blog. I found this site through a google search, and I have been coming here everyday ever since.

Good luck to fcbnews, I hope it continues to grow.

    Visca el Barca!

  • Titi186 // May 12, 2008 at 16:12

I havent the slightest clue how I came about the site!! :)

I think I was researching Henry’s move to Barca through google and must of come accross it and I have never turned back lol.

I see it come up on http://www.goonernews.com every now and again because the automated search algorythem must think Yaya Toure is the Toure of Arsenal and it posts links to your site there aswell.

  • Zin // May 12, 2008 at 16:17

    Hey Nic!

I’m from Texas here in the states. I came across FCBnews.com from your posts on soccerpulse.com, posting links to your match reports and starting XI for each Barcelona match.

  • Hilal // May 12, 2008 at 16:19

Nic I am not sure what i would have done this season without this site to come to. You have created a wonderful community for all of us to be able to discuss the highs and lows of this great team we all support.

I cannot remember exactly how I came across this site. I think I was searching for a video of Messi or something like that and I just ended up here. I read one or two comments which i didnt agree with and i just had to say something :)

Oh and im from the UK.

  • Gonzalo @ All In White // May 12, 2008 at 16:32

Many happy returns. As a Merengue I have to say that it is nice to be able to read a balanced blog about the goings-on in the rival camp. Long may it continue.

  • Andrew // May 12, 2008 at 16:35

Hello and congrats, Nic! I’m from the Chicago area here in the US. Your blog is truly outstanding and I always go to you first for opinions on the games, news, etc. I think I found this blog via theoffside.com around the time of the rumors of Puyol shaving his head. You were the only site to explain that rumor sufficiently so I decided to follow you and got hooked. Keep up the great work!

  • PHaft // May 12, 2008 at 16:38

    Nic,

I’m from Florida in the U.S. — I’ve been a Barca fan since the Rivaldo days.
You have a fantastic blog and (due to our form lately) its a nice place to come and vent about things. I found your website through a Google search, I think.
    Keep up the good work.

Many happy returns on the website’s first anniversary.

It’s a fantastic site and I have it permanently on my ‘favourites’ list. I came across your site approximately 10 months ago whilst on the ‘News Now’ website which had a link to a FCB article from your website.

I am from the Rock of Gibraltar and I have been a Barca fan practically all my life; I am 48 years now and I started as a diehard fan and supporter when Barca contracted Johann Cruyff back in 1973 when I was just 14 years old!

Congratulations, keep up the excellent work, although I appreciate that it must be a hard job.

  • jeff in sf // May 12, 2008 at 21:30

    Congrats, Nic!

I’ve been reading your excellent site since last June, but this is my first comment.

My girlfriend, Liz, and I have been avidly following Barça in the San Francisco Bay Area since they toured the US after the 2006 World Cup. We were relatively new to soccer and were jonesing after the WC for more matches when along came the most attractive club in the world. Luckily we’ve been able to watch almost every one of their matches on goltv for the past two seasons. Completely addictive.

Since then I’ve become a socio and we’ve traveled to Barcelona to see them play at Camp Nou. The city is gorgeous. We’d move there in a heartbeat if I could get work there. You’re a lucky man.

I think I originally found you through a Google search. FCBnews is absolutely the best English language resource for Barça. Your living in the city and your access to the local media are invaluable for those of us who are 6000 miles away. In addition, the commenters bring a ton of experience and insight to the analysis. I’ve learned a lot about the club and the game reading through the posts. Immediately after games I come here to get perspective on what’s transpired.

I have to say that the discussions on FCBnews are what have kept us sane during an incredibly painful season. With no one else around us to share the experience, it has been a huge comfort to know that other culés are seeing what we’re seeing and feeling what we are. The way that this season has unfolded has been like a carefully scripted tragedy. The most discouraging part was listening to the fans whistle at Deco and Eto’o yesterday. It is difficult for us to understand how these fans can turn on two world class players that have given so much to the club and played such huge roles in bringing championships to the city. I think it is ludicrous to believe that they intentionally sought yellows to avoid the Madrid clash. This is an ugly side of the FCB experience for the millions of us around the world who have tuned in because Barça seems to hold itself to a higher standard of play.

I guess you could say our Barça innocence is now lost. Rijkaard, Ronaldinho, and Deco were by far the main reasons we started following the club… their class is incredibly appealing. We have, however, bought into the “Mes Que Un Club” motto, so I have a strong feeling that we’ll be supporters for many years to come. We’re pulling for the colors now… which means we’ll continue to read your blog daily.

Thanks so much for all the time you put into it. Know that it’s had a hugely positive impact on the experience of these new American culés.

    Moltes gràcies!

  • Calrity // May 12, 2008 at 21:39

Happy birthday, i used to be a fan of football forums but after i came across this, i look no more, your match analysis have been top class and i might have made a few replys but majority of the time im just reading….

im hoping to see more and more in the right direction coming from this site, such suggestions as, clinks to clips, documentaries, memorable photos, trophy cabinet and some history and so on…

i came across this site i think through Newsnow.co.uk

Happy Birthday to FCB News!! Nic, what a wonderful site. I google so much football/soccer related news that I can’t remember where I came across your site. However I do visit it daily even if I don’t have time to post because it’s just a great source of news for my favorite club. You’ve done an awesome job of balancing your time because the site is so well informed.

Happy Anniversary! I’ve been reading this blog since last August or September. I had been a regular reader of fcbarcelonablog.co.uk (now fcbarcelonablog.com), but was disappointed by its unobjectiveness and poor English. I did a google search and landed here. It’s been a pleasure watching this site grow in popularity over the past months. I am constantly impressed by the blogger’s ability to provide punctual, insightful posts and amusing pictures. Keep it up, Nic!

ps Keep an eye out for Barca’s Thiago Alcantara. He just got called up to the Spain U-17 squad. Rising star!

congrats nic! I’m from maryland in the US, originally of Iranian decent. I came across your blog from one of the regular posters at www.fbtz.com. Been reading it for about 2 or 3 months now, and it has proven to be one of the best sources for english language news and analysis on the team.

@jeff in sf - that’s a great story, really enjoyed reading it. cheers to you and your lady!

I don’t insult Madrid I just talk with freedom. Saying stuff like you got lucky or something ITS ALWAYS BAND !. Unless at some angry occasions I make fun of Frank or something and its always posted. And I mean always. Is this just me or you guys see it too ? I Know this is extremely out of topic but i couldn’t find any where else to post this question !
