Leo Messi’s fantastic goal was not enough for ten man Argentina who went down 2-1 to Columbia in last night’s World Cup qualifier. Carlos Tevez was sent off after just 24 minutes for a stupid off-the-ball kick on a Columbian defender. However, Argentina took the lead after 36 minutes thanks to a superb individual goal from Messi. Argentina could not hold on and second half goals from Ruben Dario Bustos and Dayro Moreno turned the game around for Columbia.

I have to admit I am always in two minds when Barça players represent their national teams; on one side I want them to do well because I love them all so much, etc, etc, but a part of me is secretly hoping they do badly so that they get knocked out of whatever tournament they are playing and then they can rest in the summer and be perfectly rested for the important business of playing for Barça. Would you want the woman you love to be happy with another man? It’s a similar sort of dilemma. Keep reading →

It now seems likely that neither Samuel Eto’o nor Deco will be fit in time for the derby match with Espanyol at the start of December. Both players are looking to the weekend of the 8/9 December, when Barça play host to Deportivo, to make their comebacks. Barça will have to make do without them for the games at home to Recreativo (Sat 24th Nov), the Champions League game at Lyon (Tuesday 27th) and the game at Espanyol (1/2 Dec). Keep reading →

Positive news for Barça today when it was revealed that Giovani’s injury is less serious than feared. The Mexican was stretchered off in yesterday’s cup game at Alcoyano after a strong challenge from Carrion. Tests today have revealed that the injury is just a slightly strained ankle, Giovani should be back in training next week and be ready for Barça’s next game at home to Recreativo.

Barça cruised to an easy win against weak opposition tonight in the Spanish Cup. Goals from Thierry Henry, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Bojan Krkic now make the return leg at Camp Nou on January 2nd a foregone conclusion. Alcoyano lasted twenty-five minutes before Barça scored with their first decent move of the game. Keep reading →

Barça play Alcoyano tonight in the first leg of the last 32 of the Copa del Rey (kick off 9pm). Unfortunately due to the format of the competition this game produces little excitement for me. Ronaldinho, Messi and Milito are all absent on internation duty, while Gianluca Zambrotta is suspended due to being sent off at Getafe. Marc Crosas and Rafa Marquez have been added to a 16-man squad. There are many opinions as to why Barça find it so difficult to win away games. Is it the system? Is it the player’s attitude? Are the players not good enough? I decided to look at the league games from last season and this season so far, and I discovered a remarkable statistic. Keep reading →
