Preview: Barça Vs Deportivo

December 8th, 2007 by Nic · 10 Comments

Barça play host tomorrow to Deportivo de la Coruña (kick off 9pm local time) with the more than welcome return of Samuel Eto’o and Deco. Also back in the squad after missing last week’s draw with Espanyol are Lilian Thuram, Sylvinho and Giovani dos Santos who have all recovered from their injuries. On the down side, Toure Yaya has not recovered from his sinusitis and will miss the game along with Thierry Henry, Oleguer and Edmilson.

It’s been quite a while since Deportivo were known as Super Depor, this season they are struggling and currently find themselves third from bottom of the league. Depor will be without striker Riki who pulled a muscle in training on Thursday, he joins Lopo, Valeron and Pablo Amo on the injured list. A lot is expected of new signing Andres Guardado who plays on the left side of midfield. The 21-year-old Mexican has been compared to David Beckham for his crossing ability and he has been linked to some of Europe’s top sides.

There are a number of decisions for Frank Rijkaard to make concerning Barça’s starting lineup. First he has to decide if Samuel Eto’o starts the game on the pitch or as a substitute. Eto’o has impressed in training and could well start with the idea of playing 60 minutes or so. Otherwise Bojan Krkic would continue at centre forward and Eto’o would come on at some point in the second half. Deco is more likely to start as a sub since he only got medical clearance on Friday and has also suffered with swollen glands in his neck this week.

There could also be a return to the team for Ronaldinho Gaucho who has been performing well in training this week. There is a lot of excitement of the prospect of seeing the Messi-Eto’o-Ronnie forward line again; due to various injuries the three have only started 22 games together for Barça of which 19 have been victories with just two draws and one defeat. In those 22 games Eto’o has scored 16 goals, Messi 13 and Ronaldinho has got 10. Having the three together again will certainly improve Barça’s chances of regaining the league title this season.

Rijkaard will also have to find a substitute for Toure Yaya. If Ronaldinho starts, it could mean Andres Iniesta fills in again in front of the defence. Another possibility would be for Rafa Marquez to move into midfield where he played so well in the 2004/5 season. If Marquez moves forward then Carles Puyol will move back to central defence and Gianluca Zambrotta will return to the team at right back to complete the jigsaw.

The following eighteen have been named for the game: Valdés, Jorquera, Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Thuram, Abidal, Sylvinho, Marquez, Xavi, Iniesta, Gudjohnsen, Deco, Messi, Eto’o, Ronaldinho, Giovani, Bojan.

Possible Starting XI: Valdés, Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Abidal; Xavi, Marquez, Iniesta; Messi, Eto’o, Ronaldinho.

My Prediction: Barça 4 Depor 0 (don’t know why but I have a good feeling about this one)

I have a good feeling about this game and i think that the return of Eto’o will encourage players to lift their game. Hopefully Ronaldinho starts so all this media crap of him moving clubs can shut up. Because i am sick of it.

I think that Rijkaard will start Eto’o because of Henry’s injury and hopefully he can have a brilliant comeback game by scoring.
Rijkaard should start Ronnie and Eto’o.

    Barca 4-1

5-0. Goal scoring spree more so because of who they are playing than the injured players coming back. Ronnie will start and Eto will come in in the second half and will probably get a goal. One-sided game where I don’t see Deportivo putting much of a fight.

Continuing in this ridicuclously optimistc mode I’ll go for 4-1. Eto plays well but does not score…

No winners again this week. We were all too optimistic! Well done Nick, Eto’o played well and didn’t score, but I’m afraid the only points are for guessing the correct final score. So far this season it is still e10, FCB-Canada and Nick tied with one correct prediction each. Don’t forget to try again next week.

That’s one sad prediction on my part. Hehe. *hides in shame*
