Ronaldinho To Milan For €30Million

April 11th, 2008 by Nic · 54 Comments

According to both major Catalan sports papers Ronaldinho’s transfer to AC Milan is as good as done. Txiki Begiristain met Ernesto Bronzetti, acting for Milan, yesterday to discuss a transfer fee which is supposedly in the region of thirty million euros. Later Bronzetti met Ronaldinho’s brother, Roberto de Assis, to discuss personal terms, and in the evening De Assis was flown in Silvio Berlosconi’s personal jet to have dinner with Milan administrator Adriano Galliano.

Thirty million is more than was first expected in Barcelona but it seems that Berlosconi is desperate to make the move official as quickly as possible because on Sunday he is standing in the Italian presidential elections. For Barcelona it has been a love affair that had to come to an end, three very happy years followed by a slow decline. It’s a great shame but in the end I feel that Barça should be happy with the divorce settlement. All that remains is for the full extent of Ronnie’s ‘partying’ to be released in the Catalan press. I hope they at least wait until he has officially left the club.

Oh well… guess i’ll be switching to a Milan supporter now. I’ll still check the site once in a while because you provide some good insight but where Ronnie goes so do I

  • Nic // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:08

Fair enough Louis. But have you thought about who you will support when Ronnie retires from football? Players retire, clubs go on forever.

  • Louis // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:16

Well I’m in the US and the game is still developing here, so I support my local MLS club, the Red Bulls, but watching Barca and Ronnie was a fun way to experience the game at the top level. Though I’m sure Milan can fill that void with the likes of Kaka, Pato, Ronnie, and Ronaldo (If he recovers).

Now I just have to find a blog of this same quality that covers Milan, lol

  • Frede // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:24

I have to say i’m in seven minds about this. I love Ronnie, but he has given all he can to the club - and the other way around. I hope we will have a chance to say goodbye to him in a descent way - everything else would be terrible.
He deserves to be at the wall of fame of this club, and he truly is a living legend, who - more than any other - is the symbol of Barca’s rising.

Of course it is not official yet, but Nic, who do see as the favorite to take over Ronnie’s spot for the next season?

  • Jay // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:31

    @ Louis
Dude, you can admire players. But clubs are the ones that go on and on. Barcelona always. I wouldn’t change loyalties even if Messi or Iniesta left the club tomorrow( I currently see them as the heart and soul of Barca).

Before I give a tribute that I’d like people to read because it would be straight from the heart, let’s wait till it’s official.

  • ae // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:32

Honestly I do not think that Ronaldinho will leave club. Why would Barça want to sell Ronaldinho only to AC Milan? I am shure that there would be a lot more clubs involved in his purchase. Berlusconi is notorious as person who saids and gives a lot promises, but nothing happens on the end. But if this is somehow true then the price is so small. He should be sold for at least 50 million €.

  • Nic // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:38

If Ronnie finally does go to Milan I wish him every success. I don’t think I fell for a player ever as much as I did for Ronnie in his first seasons here and whatever is said about him in the coming weeks he should always be remembered as one of the greatest ever to play for Barça. However, I can’t see him ever being as good as in his first three seasons here. As for a substitute I think we have the players already at the club in Messi, Eto’o and Bojan to lead the line, but perhaps another young hungry attacking player wouldn’t go amiss.

  • ae // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:38

There is typo in my post it is not SHURE it is SURE

  • Louis // Apr 11, 2008 at 12:43

    @Jay

Being in the US I just find it difficult to get attached to a club that is half way across the world. If I choose to support any side across the Atlantic, chances are I will never see them play in person. The only strong bond I can develop is with my local club. Instead I find it easier to recognize certain players that embody the excitement and passion of the game, players such as Ronnie can be universally appreciated no matter where you reside. That’s why I find myself more attached to certain players then far off clubs I have seen only through Fox Soccer Channel/ESPN.

  • John // Apr 11, 2008 at 13:05

It is time to move on…

He is not the player who destroyed Mardrid in Madrid in November 2005 when we won 3 - 0, that night he was incredible. That to me that was the Rijkaard era at its best… Some of the best football ever seen!

The club will move forward and Ronnie will get fat ;-)

  • Eto'o // Apr 11, 2008 at 13:59

enough is enough Ronei has done what he has to DO

  • Dr.Osmo // Apr 11, 2008 at 14:04

    Txiki you are Crazy !

  • Hilal // Apr 11, 2008 at 14:35

It was always going to happen. I wish him the best and I hope he is a success at Milan. He had his time at Barca, he revitalized the club and he made us champions again. Some people call it the Rijkaard era but I think it was always the Ronaldinho era. I do not think for a second that we would have achieved what we did without him. I for one will never forget what he has given us and he should go down as one of the great legends of our club. I sincerely hope they let him leave gracefully and do not destroy the memory of such a great player.

Lets hope that this can be a sign to the other players that we are moving forward. There are new legends to be born in a Barca shirt and a few of them are already on their way.

It is time for the Messi/Bojan era……

  • Taras // Apr 11, 2008 at 15:18

I hope that is not true. Wathing Ronnie at Barca was priceless for me. This article almost made me cry. In fact, it did make me cry. :( And now all of his great career at Barca flashes through my mind…

P.S. I will remain a Barca supporter, though now I will have to follow Milan a bit too.

  • Taras // Apr 11, 2008 at 15:22

That is my favourite video of him.

  • FCB - Canada // Apr 11, 2008 at 16:57

Ahhhh so the inevitable has happened. As a Ronnie fan this is great news. I think it will be good for everyone in the end. But like Louis and others, my support for Barca just wont be there anymore. :( Too bad. I will watch from time to time as I have enjoyed watching Messi and Bojan. Upcoming stars in their own right.

Good luck Barca fans! Looking forward to seeing the Brazilian connection! Kaka - Pato - Ronaldo - Ronnie! :)

  • Shahenshah // Apr 11, 2008 at 17:00

imagine if Ancelotti plays a 4-2-3-1, with Ronaldo upfront leading the one top formation, Kaka behind him, Pato to the right and Ronaldinho to the left

My God, thats an all Brazillian attack!

  • Jay // Apr 11, 2008 at 17:01

    @Louis
Dude, that is exactly what I want to say. Being so far away, HOW can you attach yourself with something? Basically you can’t. But if there is something that can make distances look meagre, it is Barca’s power of attraction.

I live in India, mate. As far from Barcelona as the States. Actually more.

  • Jordi-FCB // Apr 11, 2008 at 17:30

lol at the first comment get a life!

I’m glad to see him go, finally no more crap with him, if this is true!!!!

  • Jay // Apr 11, 2008 at 18:56

Regarding the partying habits, I really have a query here.

How can you get motivated by partying n girls n sex n cars when you are so bloody gifted and lucky to be playing for Barcelona in such prestigious competitions? Very weird. I really don’t understand.

How can you be inspired by stuff that any common roadsider can do? How can you think of shaking ur legs and asses when your idolized by so many young footballers who want to be like you, in your place? I’d give up everything I have to play for Barca C even.

Forgive the imploding emotions. I really really am depressed. Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, lack of team spirit, lack of effort, injuries, gloating Man United fans and the arrogance of United itself and last but not the least, the fear of being beaten at home by another English team.

  • Dr.Osmo // Apr 11, 2008 at 19:01

Why at Milan. Why not in Fenerbache for 90 mln € :o

  • Joe // Apr 11, 2008 at 21:10

ill readily admit that Ronnie was one of the main reasons why I started to follow Barca, since then ive been turned on to football as a whole. this club and this blog are great, youre not losing a reader here Nic.

  • blaugranaboy // Apr 11, 2008 at 23:00

i just watched that youtube video that was posted. i thought it woud enjoy it, but it just made me feel incredibly sad. i would never ever in my life have thought this is how the R10 dynasty would end. after all the wonderful things he did for the club and the love he was given back, how he just totally lost it. its one of the most sad and crazy things i think football will ever see. how can a player lose his way so much? in a big way i dont want to let him go. rather bring in mourinho and let him get him into shape. honestly a manager is 100000 times eaiser to replace than his pure genuis. ive been supporting rijkaard but if jose can promise to get roni back to full form, ill pack franks’s bags for him.

but i know how bad roni has been and the disrespect he has shown FCB in general is inexcusable. i dont think i will forgive him for what he has done. and honestly i hope he doesnt do well in milan. if the situation was different i would have no reason to not give him my blessing. his entire situation is probably the saddest part of my 15 years of being a fan.

and i dont care what you all think, and i know nic may repremand me. all u that just support this club for him are not real barcelona supporters. u basically have no idea what it means to really love a club and dont understand the emotions that go along with it.

  • Nic // Apr 11, 2008 at 23:56

Thanks for posting the video Taras, although like blaugranaboy it also made me sad. I’m afraid I don’t think his situation will improve just with a new manager. Maybe a new club will be a stimulus for him but I predict even if there is an improvement it won’t last for long. There is a terrible pattern that in many cases seems to affect great genius, whether in sport, music, comedy or art there are so many cases of the fallen idol. We have to remember he is just a human being with all the insecurities and self doubts that we may all experience at times. When things go well it is fine, but when we go through a bad period it is often very difficult to turn things round. Imagine when every little mistake you make is scrutinised in the press, it is a lot of pressure to live under no matter how popular you are or how much money you make.
On the subject of loyalty to your club. I understand fans having strong views about this, but it is natural that the big clubs attract fans of many different types from all around the world. It is probably different when you follow your local team but I can understand not everyone is going to follow Barça forever (more fool you I say as Barça will always have great players to enjoy. Since I moved to Barcelona I have seen players such as Stoichkov, Koeman, Bakero, Laudrup, Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Luis Enrique, F***, Puyol, Ronaldinho and Messi, and there will be many more to come I’m sure). However, in the end I feel it is the club and the players who owe loyalty to us and not the other way round, and I have said on previous occasions that I dislike the “you’re not a real fan” arguments. Obviously I would like you all to keep reading this blog but for those who don’t when Ronaldinho leaves, thanks for reading and I hope you continue to enjoy the beautiful game.

  • Shahenshah // Apr 12, 2008 at 0:27

Damn, you know its a barca site when a traitor like F***’s name gets automatically censored.

woah! It happened again. F***….Fugo, Fago…. F***. Incredible.

  • Hilal // Apr 12, 2008 at 1:47

    haha f***

  • Morzzan // Apr 12, 2008 at 5:24

I feel R10 departing is in the best interest of both the team and the player himself. He is not the same as he was a few seasons ago and before he could completely destroy his own name, it was best he moved to a new environment, new people, new life alltogether.

  • Deidra // Apr 12, 2008 at 6:18

Umm I live in the states too and one player leaving will not affect my love for this club.

  • blaugranaboy // Apr 12, 2008 at 8:20

good post nic, F*** is classic. i was actually at camp nou his first year back, never seen hatred like that. that was such a dirty transfer. i know the “not a real fan” thing is particularly sour to you, but its a very important thing in my eyes. i also can appreciate that now due to the globality of the sport the big teams are only going to be supported because of their players and style of play. i know its true, doesnt mean i have to like it. lol. and frankly i can get over it if people stick to ONE team. when u start moving around to follow the money or the trophies, its completely different. however I strongly disagree that that the club owes us loyalty. being in love with your football team I have always equated with with having another brother. No matter what, how bad they play, the idiot players they sign, the useless managers, you continue to love and support them, but dont make your feelings quiet when you are unhappy. thats just my opinion. ive endured plenty hardship in that respect. going through those years with reiziger, bogarde, dutruel, chavanton, ronald de boer, HESP, and many many other useless clows could have made anybody switch. but if you just switch football clubs like changing your sheets, its a personal choice, I just want to voice that those people never and will never have my respect. I maintain the phisolophy in my personal life too and have gotten in a near few fights because of it. Its something I feel strongly about.

  • Vorksi // Apr 12, 2008 at 11:09

id say wait until its official
if Dinho does end up movin like Nic id like to wish him the best luck
we cant forget what he has done for the club
he truly is an icon for the club, the fans and the city
personally id like to see him get back to his best yet i know that is just fantasy
he isnt the same as he was three years ago
but I do understand the move
    btw F***
    lol priceless Nic

  • Youssef Gazia // Apr 12, 2008 at 11:21

I agree 100% with you blaugrana boy. People say its hard to follow a team when your half way across the world from it, well let me tell you that i live in Egypt and i dont remember missing one single match from 2001. Barcelona is like my second brother, no matter what it does, i’ll still support it with all my heart.

    Barca o Murte..

  • e10 // Apr 12, 2008 at 11:53

    i am with louis.
i guess i now support Milan because of my support for Ronaldinho.
I will still support Barca and still visit the website but Milan is the team i will support next season.

  • Siim // Apr 12, 2008 at 14:02

Assuming he goes now we can concentrate on rebuilding our attack. Unless Giovani leaves we don’t need another striker. Bojan - Eto’o - Messi looks so nice though I wouldn’t mind Benzema wearing Blaugrana shirt if he’s affordable.

When F*** (:D) left I remember the board saying we weren’t looking for anyone particular to replace him, I guess that’s the case with Ronnie too because now the summer’s a great chance to overlook our 4-3-3 tactics.

  • dnzi // Apr 12, 2008 at 15:24

    I guess this is Milan’s KaPaRo 2.0
(for the noob’s; KaPaRo was the Kaká-Pato-Ronaldo construction. 2.0 stands for second, improved version)

    besides that, f***. haha :p

  • dnzi // Apr 12, 2008 at 15:24

    my F*** doesn’t get censored :(

  • Nic // Apr 12, 2008 at 15:50

    Yes it does :P

  • dnzi // Apr 12, 2008 at 16:08

    haha, I see :p

  • blaugranafan // Apr 12, 2008 at 18:09

Does anyone remember the last game that featured Ronnie? Was it the away game against Atletico where he scored that bicycle kick (and we ended up getting crushed 4-2)?

  • Jay // Apr 12, 2008 at 18:27

He hasn’t played since the 1-2 Villareal defeat.

  • Taras // Apr 12, 2008 at 18:46

    May I try? F***! :)

  • Andrew // Apr 12, 2008 at 19:34

i’ll miss him but i think it’s the best choice. you can’t keep a player because what they’ve done for the club you have to keep em because of what they’re doing currently. r10 got me interested in football and barca so i’m sad to see him go but i know he must.

guess you’ll have to change your banner at the top now? haha

  • Jay // Apr 12, 2008 at 20:14

Yeah….it’s time to put Iniesta and Xavi into the banner….

  • PABLO // Apr 12, 2008 at 20:23

Cannot believe some of the stupid comments from people who only want to support a player instead of club. Let me tell you this, Ronnie is just a lazy has been. Barca had him for 5 yrs and yet he only performed good for 2 yrs. When Edmilson mentioned the Black sheep at Barca he was referring to Ronnie, Deco, and Rafa Marquez. Seems they just want to do what they want to do.
Barca don’t need trouble makers in the squad. So I am happy that Barca will let Ronnie go to Milan. Maybe now next season Barca will buy players that will work hard for the club, I bet you now that Ronnie will play good for a short while at Milan, and then he just get lazy again and him and he’s brother start demanding more Money.
    FORCA BARCA.

  • Taras // Apr 12, 2008 at 20:56

PABLO- nothing personal, but I hate people like you. Ronnie has given a lot of good things to Barca and now you throw him away like garbage. You must show him some respect for the past. Ronaldinho is a human, not a pair of used socks. Do not throw him out yet.

  • Diatus // Apr 12, 2008 at 23:24

Much respect to Ronaldhino but more respect to BARCELONA Taras.Barca all the way!!!He can go and good luck to him (heck he might come back to haunt us one of these days, who knows) but as a matter of fact I will be at the Santiago Bernabeu to watch Barcelona open a can of whoop ass on Real Madrid On May 7th…If we win the Champions League and whip Real Madrid on the return leg…well that’s a pretty good season for me. That will be better than winning the league…

  • PABLO // Apr 12, 2008 at 23:29

Taras, that maybe so, but that does not excuse the Late night partying and not turning up to training. I respect what Ronnie has done for Barca, but Cannot forgive him for his bad attitude towards the club.
Explain he’s so called non existent injury? Exactly there was not one, Ronnie was really punished for being lazy and the Board decided it’s time to let him go.
And his Brother another fine example of greediness.
Players come and go all the time, but Barca will go on forever.
    FORCA BARCA.

  • boby // Apr 13, 2008 at 0:08

giovanni!!!!! transform dude u will…. its ur chance to become the next 10 of barca

  • Luis F. // Apr 13, 2008 at 0:20

C’mon guys, give Ronnie a break! Sometimes a player just needs a change of scenery.

  • PABLO // Apr 13, 2008 at 2:24

@Luis F, sure hope that F is not short for F***.

Ronnie deserves all he gets, simple as that.

Just a month ago he said Thanks but no thanks to Milan, Inter and Chelsea.

And now he agrees term with Milan.

Another F***, Money chasing arrogant has been.

  • Rafael // Apr 13, 2008 at 5:34

I dont know what to say if its good as true. Ronaldinho made me support this club back in 2004. It would be sad to see him go.

    Id prefer him in Barca..

  • Joshua // Apr 13, 2008 at 20:31

Ronnie’s move is sweet sorrow. Part of my love affair with Blaugrana was the beginning of Ronnie. Although I don’t think his career is finished, I believe he has lost focus. On the other hand, from what I have heard, he has inspired alot of players coming up the ranks. I would love to see him return to the team someday in another form, coach or board member, but perhaps it is time for him to re-focus somewhere else where he may get re-motivated. It will also make room for the team to grow from it’s youth. Aside from all of that, it is also a setback from the team’s global popularity. But we will move on. Because of my ancestral blood, I will remain with the Blaugrana. But I will watch a few AC Milan games from afar (Chicago).

  • Jay // Apr 13, 2008 at 21:42

I partly agree with PABLO. But I would never call Ronaldinho a lazy has-been. But yes, Barcelona holds the highest priority. It should really. Even I can’t digest the concept of jump-ship fans.

You can admire a player for all his skill and contribution, but remember it’s still a contribution. The team matters most. Always.

  • barca boy // Apr 18, 2008 at 11:37
