With the signings of Thierry Henry, Toure Yaya, Eric Abidal and Gabi Milito, and the incorporation of Giovani dos Santos, Bojan Krkic and Marc Crosas into next season’s first team squad, there is now a serious overload of players and Txiki Begiristain is looking at who can be offloaded before the players return to training on July 21st.
So far this summer only Giovanni van Bronkhorst who moved to Feyenoord and Javier Saviola who has signed for Real Madrid, have left the club. Santi Ezquerro and Maxi Lopez are top of the clearout list, Maxi’s possible transfer to Sporting Lisbon having fallen through. Barça are also trying to find a move for Ludovic Giuly and Thiago Motta. Motta would like a free transfer but Barça are interested in recuperating some of the money spent this summer.
Other players who could be on the way out are Gudjohnsen, Edmilson and Belletti. Edmilson is out injured but he may have an offer from Newcastle to join them in the winter transfer window. Gudjohnsen has also been linked to Newcastle as well as to West Ham; he has indicated that he would like to stay and fight for his place at Barça, but with Henry, Eto’o, Ronaldinho and Messi, as well as young promises Bojan and Giovani to compete with, it will be very difficult for Guddy.
There has been the suggestion that Marquez might leave after Milito’s signing, but this seems unlikely, and with Puyol injured Marquez has every chance to start the season alongside Milito. He can also compete with Toure Yaya for the defensive midfield position. Deco has also been mentioned as possibly going to England, but I think this is just wishful thinking from the English clubs. Thankfully the talk of Eto’o or Ronaldinho leaving has decreased considerably, although Silvio Berlosconi and Milan never fail to mention how much they would like to sign one of them.
With time running out, it is looking increasingly likely that Barça will start training with some unwanted players still here. This is not a major disaster, and there will still be time to find moves for these players before the league season starts, but at the end of the day Barça need to get rid of four or five players, so they had better start selling soon.

Nic, I’ve got a question, if you don’t mind: has Milito got a EU passport? What about Toure? If either of them don’t, then how are we going to put Dos Santos into the first team given that we’ve only got one non-EU spot left?

Milito has an Italian passport. I’m not sure about Toure but I think he will occupy one of the non European places. Dos Santos should be getting his Spanish passport when he gets back from the under 20s world cup so there shouldn’t be a problem.

From what I have seen (friends’ trips to training sessions, youth matches), Jonathan DS is going to be even better than Giovanni. Exciting times, though I must say I expected Gio to get more game time last year.

Sell Guddy to Newcastle a with Edmilson as part of the contract. We know they are interested and we need both players to go. A good striker in an amazing forward line and an injury prone midfielder. $10 million for both.
